Random Stab of NYC Nostalgia: The Shunned House

This house is on Crosby Street, between Bleecker and Houston in Manhattan. I love the way that the decay and the palimpsest facade contrast with the potted plant on the second floor window ledge. Does someone actually live here? I used to make it a point to pass by it on my way to the Puck Building.

Some friends of mine had a loft on Crosby…I think just to the left of this picture…that I spent three weeks inhabiting in the summer of 1973 (yes, I am that old, but I was still in high school)…and half of the space had DC power (yes, supplied by the city) ONLY and half had familiar AC. They had little notes about what couldn’t be plugged in on the north side of the building. This made a kid from Ohio think that NYC was both 1) incredibly complex and 2) incredibly 19th-century.

Now that’s a great NY story. I wonder if the building has changed a bit. People will put up with all sorts of weirdness to live in that town!

Looks like the picture disappeared (/archives/shunnedhouse.jpg) do you still have it?

Oops, looks like I goofed when I moved over to Wordpress. I’ll fix it up later at home. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

    Fixed!

Crosby is one of my very favourite New York Streets - I used to go to a bar there called n, until it became way too crowded.

Courtney Love had an apartment there at one time

and John Updike’s hero Beck also lived there in one of the novels

I think it also appears in a few movies including (I think) Unfaithful.
