Slogans for Atlanta

September 1st, 2004

The Atlanta Metroblog notes that Atlanta is a city without a slogan and suggests some.

My favorite so far, for obvious reasons, is “Atlanta - New York without the cold.”

Update: It’s been Farked. Didn’t see anything brilliant here, but I do think one comment I read would do the trick:

Hey. Not all the streets are named “Peachtree”, the others are all named “Piedmont” or “Roswell”.

I would add “Claremont” (or “Clairemont” or “Clairmont”) and “Lanier” to that.

New York? That’s a bit of a stretch. I’d go with “Atlanta - Detroit without the cold.” They’re both historic geographical hubs, are home to major corporations with strong American brands (Detroit: Ford; Atlanta: Coca-Cola), both are known for their music scenes, cars are very important to both, their metropolitan areas are both in the 4-5 million range (though Detroit proper has 2x as many people as Atlanta proper) and it looks like the two aren’t too far apart demographically speaking (Atlanta’s a bit more diverse)… as a comparable city, Detroit could work.

I’m not sure it would actually get any additional tourists to come here though.

How about we co-opt Craig Kilborn’s slogan for Baltimore? “Combining the casual racism of the south with the industrial decay of the north.”

I think the last thing an ascendant city like Atlanta would want to do is compare itself with a symbol of urban decay like Detroit. How much do you want to bet we end up with some pun on the word “peachy”?

Eh, I was being snide. Actually, I always liked all the variations of “New South” (epicenter of the New South, capital of the New South, etc.) and thought they were pretty appropriate for this city.

If the slogan can save us from the horrible moniker Hotlanta I will be grateful. But yeah, Atlanta doesn’t come close to being in the same league as New York, even in a hypothetical slogan. How about “Atlanta - the Southern Phoenix” since we are after all a city that burns/tears things down and builds new ones in their place. Although that might upset Phoenix, Arizona.

Atlanta has long designated itself “The city too busy to hate,” but everybody knows you can’t pick your own nickname (or shouldn’t be allowed to, at any rate) so that’s inspired obvious variations, like “the city too hateful to be busy” or “the city too busy hating,” etc.

“Atlanta - according to Futurama we’ll be living undersea by the year 3000.”

A run on the old one: “Atlanta: The City to busy running for it’s life to hate.”
