CHRONICLES: Volume One

September 26th, 2004

The Wilco Book may be coming out the day before Jeff’s birthday, but the first volume of Bob Dylan’s autobiography is due to be published just in time for mine.

The book is the first in a series of the artist’s self-penned personal histories, with this volume being comprised of first-person narratives focusing on significant periods in Dylan’s life and career.

(OK, fine, the Wilco Book might be better.)

I can’t stomach Dylan these days, but back in high school I though it would be cool to grow a beard and tried to learn the words to every Bob Dylan song I could find. I even read his novel!

I’m right there w/ you as far as Dylan is concerned. Was a huge fan until about a decade ago. Then something happened and I just haven’t quite gotten it back. I read Tarantula also, but never grew a beard.

BTW, check out the Gates interview in Newsweek. Link over at my place.

    I have a beard somewhere.

Awesome, Jeff, thanks for the link to the Gates interview.

    Luis, you’re sick. :)

I take many months off between my Dylan-obsession phases. In fact, I don’t think I’ve had a Dylan phase at all in 2004, though I will play Highway 61 Revisited from time to time. Think I’ll wait for reviews and then the paperback edition to decide whether it’s worth picking up.

And that Wilco book is very expensive, isn’t it? Sigh.

When you consider that the Wilco book comes with a CD, it’s not so bad.

The best Dylan stuff to listen to occasionally over time, in my opinion, is Biograph (very appropriate here) and the first three volumes of the Bootleg Series. He’s at his best on some of those outtakes and demos.
