LTR’s Reading List for Jan ‘05
January 3rd, 2005This is an attempt to regulate my impulse purchases and, even worse, my impulse readings.
Nymphomation, by Jeff Noon
I found this at Borders in a lovely little Black Swan edition. Jeff Noon is, for me, all the good parts of cyberpunk (humor, richly imagined near future, extreme landscapes, satire, and incantory, almost poetic wordplay) without any of the posing and gratuitousness of some other writers.
Altered Carbon, by Richard K. Morgan
This is a book I’ve heard good things about. I’ve been meaning to read it for a while. What am I waiting for? Nothing!
The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories, edited by Leslie Klinger
I grew up in a household of Holmes fanatics. As some of you know, my parents’ cat (a fat, ancient thing) is named Watson. I love the stories and see nothing wrong with reading them over again and obsessing over them in some detail.
Falling Angel, by William Hjortsberg
I liked Nevermore, and I hear that Falling Angel is supposedly a modern noir classic. Bring it on!
Vergil in Averno, by Avram Davidson
This is the second in a trilogy. I’m a fan of the first book and the third one, The Scarlet Fig, unpublished in Davidson’s lifetime, is coming out this month from The Rose Press. So it’s time for me to get ready for it.
Not Quite Dead Enough, by Rex Stout (two Nero Wolfe novellas)
I love Nero Wolfe. This one fits in my pocket and will make good lunchtime reading at work.
Natural History, by Justina Robson
This won critical acclaim in the U.K. and is just being released in the U.S. this month. I’m all for finding out what it’s about.
(Wild card: The Knight by Gene Wolfe)

I’ve not read any of these books but it seems like a good way to start off the year. My parents were big Nero Wolfe fans and we used to watch the TV series way back when. You ever see it?

Nope, never saw the series.

LTR,
There’s an article about the annotated SH in today’s Detroit Free Press - I’m assuming there’s a link, but didn’t take the time to peek.
Enjoy,
Dan
