Hallelujah, Pass the Meatballs!

April 19th, 2005

The date is set.

IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today announced that its Atlanta, GA store will open this Summer on Wednesday, June 29, 2005. The store will be the Swedish company’s 23rd in the U.S. and first in the Southeast. Until IKEA Atlanta opens, the closest IKEA stores are in Houston, TX and Woodbridge, VA.

I can watch the construction from my window at work. I can’t wait.

Congratulations on your new addition! When we lived in Cincinnati (OH), my wife and I drove to Indianapolis (IN) for a Nordstroms (technically, my wife dragged me kicking and screaming, but that’s a semantic issue at this point). IKEA would be worth a drive, but not Georgia to Virginia, so I’m sure you’re very pleased.

They have some pretty good coffee. But I’ll tell you: if my wife wants to truly torture me, she forces me to make a trip to Ikea with her.

I live in a part of Sweden where the nearest IKEA is a ninety-minute drive away… although, having said that, our ‘local’ varuhus, which is in an otherwise utterly unremarkable middle-of-nowhere town called Älmhult, is the original one, or, as we call it, the mothership, the body from which IKEA’ globe-encircling tentacles proceed.
